Yesterday I was very upset to hear the news that there was a school shooting here in Fort Lauderdale and that a fifteen year old girl was dead and another girl had been arrested. School shootings are always troubling news, but for me this one was especially poignant since it took place at the high school I attended. Granted, it's been over a quarter century since I stepped foot on the campus, but still the ties are there.
So it was with even more dismay that I saw The Miami Herald has reported that the shooting was motivated by "spurned romantic advances."
Well...
The news made headlines around the world. Even the Chinese Xinhua service picked it up. I'm wondering how long it will take the news to come up with a moniker for this unfortunate girl who decided to deal with her problems with a gun. It was painful enough having to live through nearly nightly reports for Aileen Wuornos and her "Lesbian Serial Killer" nickname so I'm sure they will come up with something especially juicy.
I know that the upcoming days, weeks and probably years will be equally hard, especially since it took place where I have many happy memories. Oh Dillard High, my Dillard High. We love you so, Oh Dillard High.
Go Panthers.
