On the Sun and the Earth

Nasa's Space Weather site has some beautiful images this week.

This, according to the site, is a cloud of hot gas held in the grip of solar magnetic fields. Physicists are puzzled by the way the top of the prominence cascades down as fast as it does since the effects are impossible to recreate here. They call it a beautiful mystery.

The Jules Verne Automated Transfer Vehicle successfully performed its mission and returned to Earth in tiny disintegrated bits to rest in peace twenty thousand leagues under the Pacific. This is what it looked like...

The Jules Verne delivered over six tons of cargo to the ISS.

I was watching CSpan yesterday and they were discussing Nasa's upcoming budget. One senator from California praised Nasa on its efforts in detecting NEO's. Here are the fly-bys for September. (Note: LD means Lunar Distance, or the length of distance between the Earth and the Moon. 5 LD is damn close.)

A solar wind stream hit Earth on Sept. 3rd sparking a storm of magnitude 6 on the 0 to 9 of geomagnetic activity. Here are some pics of the results.

What an amazing world we live in.
